 Carol Neve Shiffman was born in New York City and lived in Queens, where she began dancing at the Queens Arts Center established by her mother Irene. She was also a student at the Merce Cunningham studio. She attended high school while living in Great Neck and attended the University of Rochester and the Sorbonne in Paris. Her post graduate work was at UCLA, and it was in Los Angeles that she established Momentum Dance Company. The company performed for many years at the Embassy Auditorium while Carol continued to teach at college and university levels. In the 80’s Carol moved to Sacramento California with her husband Larry Harbison, where she served as a program director for the California Arts Council. In addition to legislative matters, an important part of her work was the artists-in residence program that placed visual artists, musicians, choreographers, theatre artists and writers in schools and a wide variety of community organizations and institutions, while continuing to choreograph works for theatre and dance companies. Carol moved to Washington state to become the Executive Director of Centrum, a 30 year old multi-arts organization located on the Olympic Peninsula. Carol, with Larry as Director of Arts programs, presented a full spectrum of music programs, writers workshops, visual arts, film, choreographers and dance companies, an artist-in-residence program and arts education programs for all ages; drawing participants from all over the world.
Moving to Seattle, she became Dean of Music at the renowned Cornish College of the arts. Prior to becoming Executive Director at MCW, she was Dean of Dance at Suny Purchase. She has left a legacy of light and enlightenment for artists, audiences, students, arts organizations, and communities. |
