In its first year, the Summer Vocal Performance Academy was directed by members of the Conservatory’s voice faculty: Thomas Jamerson, former leading artist with the New York City Opera; Shirley Love, former soloist with the Metropolitan Opera; Mary Elizabeth Poore, recording artist and performer with the Gregg Smith Singers; Lorraine Goodman, Broadway appearances in “Les Miserables” and “Master Class”; Nancy Marano, recorded seven Jazz CDs and performs internationally; and Nakia Verner, participant in the 2006 Renata Scotto Opera Academy. The participating 12 students ranged from 14 to 20 years old. During the academy, which ended Aug. 10, students developed their potential in the vocal arts, gained an awareness of healthy vocal technique and built essential skills which are the foundation for a range of vocal styles, including classical/opera, musical theatre, jazz and gospel. Well-known soprano Harolyn Blackwell joined the group, working individually with students and in a public master class. The program wrapped up with student performances in the conservatory’s recital hall.
