Stefani Starin was born in Newburgh, New York. She began flute studies in the fifth grade because her older sister left a flute sitting in the living room. She progressed quickly, and graduated from Marlboro College in Vermont with a BFA in Music. After a year studying privately with Julius Baker, she went on to receive a Masters degree from California Institute of the Arts. She also has a graduate degree in teaching from Lehman College and teaching certification in Orff pedagogy.
For over 20 years, Ms. Starin has been co-founder and director of Newband, a contemporary chamber group that specializes in microtonal music. She has commissioned, performed and recorded on many labels, including Musical Heritage Society, Opus One, Mode, Lovely, I Virtuosi, Point and Aurora records. She also freelances as a flute player in the New York Metropolitan area. “I am as comfortable teaching a seven year old as I am teaching a seventy-two year old. I believe everyone has something to share musically and I am committed to helping them realize their musical potential. I have a particular interest in solving technical problems as well as drawing out each student’s ability to express him- or herself on the flute.” Ms. Starin is currently a professor of flute at Montclair State University in New Jersey. She been a faculty member at the Music Conservatory of Westchester for over ten years. In her spare time, she is an avid gardener, swimmer and practitioner of yoga and tai chi. “I enjoy being in the outdoors almost as much as being in the music studio.” Photo/Pinsky Studio |

"I am very happy and proud of Jun Luke Foster’s and Benjamin Boventer’s achievements. I taught Jun Luke for 12 years and his acceptance to Juilliard School of Music is a great sign of his musical maturity and accomplishment. He was also accepted to Harvard and Yale. Benjamin was with me for five years. He won a prestigious $40,000 scholarship from Skidmore College for music studies. He was the only pianist in that competition who received this award. He was also accepted at Tufts University. It is very satisfying to know that our students continue to achieve such success." —Svetlana Gorokovich, MCW Faculty |
