Born in China, Chuan Qin started his musical journey on a piano with only eighty keys in the hallway of his father’s apartment building after watching the famous model ballet “The Red Detachment of Women.” He soon entered the Middle School affiliated with the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. After earning his bachelor’s and master’s at the Juilliard School in New York, he is now a doctoral candidate at the same school.

His performance career has taken him all over the world. He has appeared in solo recitals and concerts in Weill Hall at Carnegie, Alice Tully, Steinway Hall in New York,  Salle Gaveau and Opera Comique in Paris, National Theater in Beijing, City Hall Concert Hall in Hong Kong, to name a few. Mr. Qin was the only pianist chosen by the Austrian Cultural Department as the soloist in the last concert dedicated to the celebration of Mozart’s 250th birthday in 2007.  From repertoire ranging from early Baroque to 21st century, he has worked closely with contemporary composers such as Ivan Fedele, Martin Matalon, and Qigang Chen. In 2008, he was invited to play an all Polish contemporary music recital by the Lutoslawski Society in Warsaw.

A winner of many international competitions, his major prizes include Maria Canals in Spain, China International and Olivier Messaien in France. He was also the recipient of the Gina Bachauer and Arthur Rubinstein Prizes from Juilliard. His performances have been recorded and broadcast live by WQXR, Radio France, and TV stations in Asia.

Mr. Qin’s teaching career also started early while he worked as an assistant for his first piano teacher. Since then, he has taught in Yage Music School in New York, given master classes in Central and Shanghai Conservatories, as well as served as a juror in several competitions, and is now a director of the Qin Chuan International Cultural and Arts Center.

As a teacher, Mr. Qin intends to bring out the passion in his students. He believes that learning music should be fun, stimulating, and enlightening. Building a rapport between the teacher and the student is crucial. A student should learn something new in each lesson. He tries to build a unique set of teaching tools for each student. As one should not play Beethoven and Chopin the same way, Mr. Qin strives to tailor his approach suited to students with different backgrounds, needs, and goals. His students have been successful in competitions, and been accepted by the Juilliard and Manhattan School of Music
He is greatly indebted to his own teachers including Huifang Ye, Qinghua Wang, Jerome Lowenthal, Robert McDonald, Yoheved Kaplinsky, Pillip Kawin, as well as an important mentor for his teaching career, Paul Sheftel.

"I am very happy and proud of Jun Luke Foster’s and Benjamin Boventer’s achievements. I taught
Jun Luke for 12 years and his acceptance to Juilliard School of Music is a great sign of his musical maturity and accomplishment. He was also accepted to Harvard and Yale. Benjamin was with me for five years. He won a prestigious $40,000 scholarship from Skidmore College for music studies. He was the only pianist in that competition who received this award. He was also accepted at Tufts University. It is very satisfying to know that our students continue to achieve such success."
