A native of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, Mary Elizabeth Poore grew up loving music. She began singing in church choir in fourth grade and has been singing ever since. Music was always at the center of her life and when she was fourteen, she began taking voice lessons, in addition to her piano and French horn studies. She chose to pursue her vocal studies in college at Indiana University, earning Bachelors and Masters degrees in Voice Performance. While there Mary Elizabeth became an Associate Instructor.

"At Indiana, I discovered that I really enjoyed teaching and felt that I had the ability to look at each student individually and bring out the best in each one. Voice lessons should be enjoyable at any level, and progress should be its own reward. I specialize in a real Bel Canto approach to singing, with proper breathing and support and an ease of production to bring out the natural beauty of each voice. I stress good diction, phrasing, and style interpretation, at the same time building confidence. I like working with students of all ages, from children to adults, and teach a variety of styles from Classical to musical theater. My students do well in auditions and recitals."

Mary Elizabeth has been on the faculty of the Conservatory since 1995, and also teaches at Turtle Bay Music School in New York City. She is a faculty member of the Bel Canto Institute, a summer program in residence in Florence, Italy. As a performer, she has sung regional concerts and opera throughout the United States , has been soprano soloist with the Basically Bach Festival in New York for the past six years, and sings and records with the Gregg Smith Singers. She created the title role in the world premiere of Libby Larsen's Mrs. Dalloway for the Lyric Opera of Cleveland and performed the world premiere of John Kelly's Light Shall Lift Them at the Brooklyn Academy of Music as part of the Next Wave Festival. Mary Elizabeth lived and performed in Rome, Italy where she studied with the world renowned opera coach, Luigi Ricci.

"I am very happy and proud of Jun Luke Foster’s and Benjamin Boventer’s achievements. I taught
Jun Luke for 12 years and his acceptance to Juilliard School of Music is a great sign of his musical maturity and accomplishment. He was also accepted to Harvard and Yale. Benjamin was with me for five years. He won a prestigious $40,000 scholarship from Skidmore College for music studies. He was the only pianist in that competition who received this award. He was also accepted at Tufts University. It is very satisfying to know that our students continue to achieve such success."
